If you were to describe this story to a serious, normal person, how would you even go about doing that? Two takeaways from my first read-through of this story more than a decade ago was that Long John Silver’s hushpuppies and the Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ USA” would forever remain tainted in my mind. Some things you just can’t unread.
